Why Moving to Ojochal Is a Smart and Responsible Choice — From Those Who Know It Best
By long-time realtors living and working in Ojochal, Costa Rica
As real estate professionals who have lived and worked in Ojochal for years—some of us decades—we’ve had a front-row seat to the town’s transformation. We understand there are mixed opinions about the influx of foreign residents and the development that’s followed. But here’s our perspective, shaped by experience, local relationships, and a deep love for this community.

A Town Revitalized, Not Replaced
Ojochal was once a sleepy village facing the same economic uncertainty that many rural towns in Costa Rica have endured. The shift from an agricultural economy was not caused by foreigners—it was driven by broader national and global economic forces. Real estate investment and residential tourism brought with them jobs, opportunities, and infrastructure improvements that would not otherwise exist here today.
The growth of our local economy has helped countless Costa Rican families find employment in construction, hospitality, education, property management, and wellness services. What’s often missing from the debate is how many local entrepreneurs have launched businesses that thrive on this new dynamic—including a broad range of shops, restaurants, services, tourism ventures, and more. Most daily needs can be met within town, and the local economy offers diverse employment opportunities for Costa Ricans.

A Community That Cares
Many of the foreign residents who choose to call Ojochal home are not absentee investors. They are retirees, families, and digital nomads who get involved, volunteer in the community, and support local causes. Our real estate agency, Osa Tropical Properties, regularly supports initiatives in schools, conservation projects, and local development.
Unlike some beach towns that have lost their cultural roots, Ojochal has remained distinctly Costa Rican. You’ll still hear Spanish in the streets, find sodas serving casados, and see fiestas patronales celebrated. The difference is that now, people from around the world are joining in—not taking over.

Inclusive Growth Is Possible—And Happening
We acknowledge the importance of thoughtful development. That’s why our agency works with both foreign and Costa Rican buyers to ensure fair access to land and transparent transactions. We champion projects that include sustainability measures, green spaces, and a respect for the community’s history and ecology.
We’re proud to say that many of our clients are not just looking for a house—they’re looking for a home and a sense of belonging. They choose Ojochal not to escape, but to engage—with the land, the people, and a slower, more meaningful way of life.
